The club is version 2.0 of the North Fork Wine Club which was started 7 years ago. The North Fork Wine Club was purchased this summer by Bob Mate and Dave Ball, owners of the B and D Wine Company. Our vision is to expand the club beyonds its strong roots on Long Island and New York City. We believe that the wines of Long Island can compete in quality and price with the best wines from around the country and the world.
We plan on capping membership at 1,000. This is because many of the wines produced by Long Island’s winemakers are limited in production. The wineries tend to be small, family-owned ventures making low-production, high-quality, hand-crafted wines — and it is important to us that we share only the best with our members.
For those of you who might not be familiar with the wines that are grown on Long Island, you will find many of the same varieties that are grown in France. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are some of the staples of the region. However many of the wineries have been expanding their production beyond these grapes, trying varieties from around the world. You will now find syrah, gamay, riesling and viognier to name just a few.
Some wineries specialize in one type of wine: Sparkling Pointe produces (surprise!) only sparkling wines. Croteaux Cellars only makes roses (and they are very good). There are fewer than 50 wineries on Long Island so it is easy to get to know them intimately, and we are looking forward to introducing our members to each of them over the coming months and years.
We hope you will join us on our happy journey. If you have any questions or comments, drop a note to firstname.lastname@example.org.
